Style is not just about clothes, nor is it something bestowed upon you if you are the correct shape or size. Style is about the way you hold yourself and move through the world. It is about paying attention to the details of you, which means embracing and taking full advantage of what you have to work with.
-Tim Gunn
In 1920, after marrying and publishing This Side of Paradise, F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote: "Riding in a taxi one afternoon between very tall buildings under a mauve and rosy sky, I began to bawl because I had everything I wanted and I knew I would never be happy again."
Wow. The first time after I read this sentence, I really felt like laughing. But come to think of it, it's actually quite a sad thought. Thankfully, I don't think like that. Everytime I've been exceedingly happy, I try to embrace the joy and time as much as possible.
I prefer James Bond creator Ian Fleming's view: "Never say 'no to adventures. Always say 'yes' otherwise you'll lead a very dull life."
A person's attitude really is important. It affects your performance and mood and those around you.
As for me, I've always been a known optimist in school. I'm the one who, as they say, finds the silver lining in the stormy clouds.
Anyway, I was browing through the internet and I came upon this video advertisement from 1994 about an internet product. Just look at those early websites! Watching it, I couldn't help appreciate the search tools we have today from Yahoo to Google. I wonder how people back then searched for info. Man! I'm so happy technology has improved so much. Not only do we not have to fear the telephone bills for surfing 24/7 (at least for me). The webpages sure look prettier than those of 1994. And internet speed! I remember in 1998 how I waited for half an hour for Disney's Mulan movie trailer to load. Now, I don't even wait to watch trailer. The pages just load almost instantly.
Lose this Day Loitering from Faust
Lose this day loitering – ‘twill be the same story
To-morrow – and the next more dilatory;
Each indecision brings its own delays,
And days are lost lamenting o’er lost days.
Are you in earnest? Seize this very minute –
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.
Only engage, and then the mind grows heated –
Begin it, and then the work will be completed!
Hmm..I need to watch Dead Poets' Society one of these days.
"The Era of Procrastination, of
Half-Measures, of Soothing and
Baffling Expedients, of Delays,
is Coming to its Close.
In its Place We are Entering a
Period of Consequences."
- Sir Winston Churchill (November 12, 1936)
"It's just human nature to take time to connect the dots...I also know that there can be a day of reckoning when you wish that you could have connected the dots more quickly." - Al Gore
Regret. Often times we make mistakes in our lives, big or small, and never realize it until it is too late. Only when we look back do we see more clearly what we should have done. Scientists have been warning again and again about the consequences of global warming. Opponents argue that this phenomenon that's taking place right now is being exaggerated, that it is just a period that Earth is going through, like the Ice Ages from before.
So, which side is right?
Does it really matter though? We all know that many of our habits, our wasteful way of life, is hurting nature. So why not just change, and whether this global warming is a crisis or not, if we take action, humans will have done something for the better. We will have helped protect the earth and environment for future generations to come.
The very first picture of Earth from space, taken on December 24, 1968.
I'm going to watch The Great Global Warming Swindle next, which takes a stance against An Inconvenient Truth.
Currently reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. I have been planning to read this book for 2 years, and finally, this summer, I have gotten around to it. And man, it is as good as many people have said. I am only halfway through the book. But quotes:
"Now, no matter what the mullah teaches, there is only one sin, only one. And that is theft. Every other sin is a variation of theft...When you kill a man, you steal a life, you steal his wife's right to a husband, rob his children of a father. When you tell a lie, you steal someone's right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness...There is no act more wretched than stealing. A man who takes what's not his to take, be it a life or a loaf of naan...I spit on such a man." - Baba.
I have been searching online for airplane tickets I need to book to get to the States. It's Singapore Airlines vs. Cathay Pacific. I'll probably be taking Cathay Pacific not only because I use it almost everytime I fly, but also that there are almost no seats left on Singapore Airlines. Too bad, I've been wanting to fly Singapore Airlines since the first time I flew when I was 6, from South Africa to Australia.
I can't wait till the new Harry Potter book comes out!! I pre-ordered it last week! I need to re-read all the previous books before the new one comes out. My memory of the last two are extremely hazy since I blazed through them the moment I got the books, and never reread them again.
Harry Potter will always hold a special place in my heart since he grew up with me. I was 11 when I read about the 11-year old Harry hearing about Hogwarts for the first time, and now, as I have reached adulthood and have graduated from high school, Harry and his friends will also be entering the adult wizarding world and graduating from Hogwarts.
What will happen in this last book? Who will die?
I want to watch the upcoming HP movie and Pixar's Ratatouille.
